POC, Protecting Our Children, is a company I created after seeing a need for better protective headgear for kids wanting to play their hearts out. I’m the mom of five, 4 girls and a boy, and it’s my job to make sure they make it to adulthood with whatever intelligence we managed to pass on. We partnered with a company called ProCap who have over 30 years of helmet research and development.
I read the news like the rest of you, and the information out there on the long-term effects of concussions is disturbing, to say the least. Did you know that most concussions are suffered during practice, days before the big game? Did you know that over 800 former NFL players are suing the league for long term effects of the concussions and head injuries they suffered while playing with helmets very similar to the ones our children are wearing today?
The helmet guys are trying by loading the interior of the helmets with padding, but it’s just not enough. Two hard helmets banging together is loud and you can only imagine the effects. Two soft helmets dissipate the force and protect the head. The car guys understood this early on by replacing the old car bumpers made of hard steel with the softer bumpers we have today. They also added seat belts and then added another layer of protection when they put in soft air bags. We're not saying the hard shelled helmets today aren't good, we just know that adding another layer of protection could help stop this concussion epidemic.
